When asked what would be the most difficult part for athletes when they return to training after this long lockdown period, Viren Rasquinha, a sport specialist and Olympic gold medal winner, said that it would be getting back to their previous fitness level.

This will also be the case for everyone who will head back to the gym in the weeks and months to come. How should you go about it?

Returning after Various Levels of Conditioning

The difficulties each will face in returning to exercising regularly will depend on how we spent the lockdown period. It is quite possible that for some of you, the coronavirus pandemic was a chance to go back to exercising. If that is the case, then it is the perfect time to continue in that direction and start going to a gymnasium regularly. A coach will be able to build a program adapted for you, and you can continue your path to staying in good health. For more on health and wellness, you can check out this online health magazine.

The most difficult scenario will be for those who were exercising regularly and have lost the habit while staying at home. A return to normal shape and fitness level will take time, and having to lower your expectations will be the most difficult part of your journey. We all want to believe that we are still as strong as we were two months ago, but it will not be the case for anyone; except those who had a complete gym at home. But if you slow down a lot, you will need to be very careful with your weight lifting sessions.

Start by using weights at least 20% less heavy than you use to lift. Trying to get back right away to your previous level will not only be impossible but also quite dangerous as you could hurt yourself. And that would mean postponing your return to sport again.

How To Prepare?

If you have been really naughty and have not been exercising at all during the lockdown, start by getting busy around the house. There is so much to do to get your heart pumping! Cleaning the windows is a great exercise for the arms. In fact, cleaning a small apartment can represent the equivalent of running an 8 km race.

If you have a backyard, get started on a garden or cut the branches of the trees. Being outside will also help your moral level, so spend some time gardening!
