There are so many reasons to visit Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture in Japan, that we wouldn’t have enough space in this article to do so.
Whether you visit in early spring, to be awed by the cherry blossoms, or at other times of the year for its world-famous aquarium, you will forge incredible memories. But right now, Okinawa islanders are conflicted about tourism while the COVID-19 pandemic is still around.
During most of the coronavirus pandemic, the island of Miyako and others in the Yaeyama archipelago, have seen their normal share of tourists. That is until a few weeks ago when residents started to become worried of the virus making its way to their part of the world.
There seemed to be a rumour floating around saying that Japan's southern islands were safe from the virus. It attracted many visitors, especially younger ones who are currently celebrating their graduation from school. But the mayor gave a news conference to put an end to the idea that this part of Japan was free of the virus and reminded everyone of the safety measures in place in the country.
Residents are conflicted by this situation. They want to welcome tourists since it brings in money the region needs, but at the same time, they are getting worried about a potential explosion of cases of the coronavirus. If that were to happen, the situation could become complicated very rapidly, since the local hospital only has three beds for patients with infectious disease. Hopefully, this situation will be resolved soon and everyone can go back to enjoying tourism in Japan.
