Marriage is Good For Your Health

A study of nearly a million adults shows that if you are married then you fare better than single people when it comes to high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. But what can we learn from this?

The Research

The research was carried out by the Aston Medical School based on nearly a million adults who all suffered from high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol.. The research is clear, that if you are married you have a better chance of surviving a heart attack. The research was presented to the British Cardiovascular Society. The stats were that men and women in their 50’s, 60’s and 70’s with high cholesterol were 16% more likely to survive than single people. This is also true of those with diabetes and high blood pressure.

Importance Of Marriage

Why marriage should impact so positively on health is not fully known but researchers seem to believe that being married, or at least having someone special in your life, may encourage you to look after yourself. Researchers are interested in looking at the way marriage may make you feel and look at how this could be replicated for people’s health.

Risk Factors of Heart Disease

Another message from the researchers however is that married or not there are some very clear factors which can trigger heart problems, they include:

  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Obese/overweight
  • Physically inactive
  • A history of family heart disease
  • Age

So married or single, do see a doctor if any of the above affect you.
